With the continued inclusion of engineered nanoparticles (NPs) in consumer products, a detailed understating their release during use is critical in determining their potential effect on human and environmental health. Of interests are commercially available NP-based surface coatings including paints, stains, and sealants as they represent an area of direct contact between the product, the consumer, and the surrounding environment. In this study, pristine and aged (1-year outdoor) Micronized-Copper pressure treated lumber, were coated with ZnO NPs dispersed in Super-Q Water or commercially available wood stain. Three ZnO NP sizes were investigated, 20, 40, and 60 nm. After coatings, subsections of material were placed coated side down in Synthetic Precipitation Leaching Solution for a period of 72 h. The resulting leachate was sequentially fractionated through 0.45µm and 10 kda filters to differentiate between ionic and particulate release. Zinc concentrations were determined through Atomic Spectroscopy. The initial results indicate that NP release is greatly affected by dispersion matrix (water vs. stain) and the age of the coated surface, and less on the size of the applied NP.<br/>
