Solid electrolyte is critical to the next generation solid state lithium ion batteries with high energy density and safety. Sulfide electrolytes such as Li10GeP2S12 (LGPS) and Li10+1SiP2S12 (LSPS) are particularly promising as they exhibit the high ionic conductivity on the order of 10 mScm−1, comparable to the commercial liquid electrolytes. Here we report a relationship between the microstructure and electrochemical stabilities of sulfide solid electrolytes, and prove that their electrochemical stability windows can be improved via modified microstructures. We show that by mechanically controlling the swelling of the particles, using a core-shell structure, decay can be offset resulting in a considerably wider stability window.
