BODIPY dyes have become one of the most powerful classes of fluorescent dyes in recent decades. In this talk, two different modes of extending the concept of BODIPYs are presented. One deals with the merger of two BODIPY systems to one extended system with two boron centers (BOIMPYs). The other uses a unique oligomerization strategy leading to ethylene-bridged BODIPY motifs. Corresponding oligomers comprising up to eight monomeric units are presented and discussed with respect to their microstructures and photophysical properties. Some of the oligo-BODIPYs are characterized by a tight intramolecular arrangement triggering a J-type excitonic coupling, exceptionally small linewidths of the absorption and emission event, outstandingly high attenuation coefficients (up to 1 042 000 M<sup>-1</sup>cm<sup>-1</sup>) and quantum yields of up to unity.
