Superhydrophobic surfaces exhibit many unique properties, including resistance to soiling, biofouling, accretion of cells and separation of an embedded sensitizer from the target site. These unique properties make them good candidates for use in oxidation of compounds, disinfection, and eradication of a monolayer or otherwise thin layer of tumor cells. Recently we reported on how a superhydrophobic sensitizer can deliver singlet oxygen from the plastron to kill bacteria suspended in solution or grown as a biofilm. While this study showed good proof of concept for this superhydrophobic technique, there remain many engineering details to increase singlet oxygen output from the superhydrophobic surface. Therefore, we performed theoretical calculations on the effect of particle shape, size, and sensitizer molecule loading on 1O2 output as a way to advance this superhydrophobic technique. We also present results on the effect of solid vs mesoporous particles. These calculations may be of practical importance for increasing 1O2 output for water purification and medical devices.
