A large focus recently in chemical manufacturing processes has been on developing greener and more efficient methods for chemical synthesis.  Still, standard methods for industrial production has remained generally unchanged for decades in large batch reactors.  These systems continue to pose safety concerns for many materials as well as limit the ability to provide flexible chemical production methods.  One potential system for improving on these aspects utilizes microreactors for continuous flow synthesis.  The Kansas City National Security Campus (KCNSC) has worked to synthesize several harmful materials required for customers using microreactors, and initial efforts to produce a peroxide curative in flow have proven successful.  Unfortunately, the process requires a large amount of bench work to purify and prepare the peroxide for use in downstream systems.  The added requirement of post synthesis processing is often cited as a limitation to  flow chemistry for commercial utility as especially time intensive when throughput is already at a premium.  However, with new developments in flow chemistry techniques, a process for purifying and separating the final product from the waste stream has been developed.  This presentation will compare the synthesis before and after the in-line improvements and discuss the future of microreactor technology in a production environment.
