Transition metal β-diketonates are commonly used as precatalysts in many important chemical transformations. As ionic, weak-field ligands, β-diketonates provide a unique electronic environmant to support organometallic intermediates, compared with more electron-donating ammine, phosphine, or carbene donors. Although organometallic transition metal species supported by β-diketonates have been proposed as intermediates in catalysis, few catalytically-relevant complexes have been characterized. The use of terphenyl-substituted β-diketonate ligands enables controls the steric environment around the metal and enables the characterization of reactive organometallic transition metal complexes such as Zr(Aracac)2(Bn)2 and Fe(Aracac)(mesityl), which are important for olefin polymerization and cross-coupling catalysis respectively.
