Flow chemistry evolved rapidly during the last decade. The development of various flow chemistry techniques has enabled scientists to address scale-up challenges associated with batch processing and helped broaden the scope of reactions amenable to scale-up. Three examples were selected to demonstrate the impact of flow chemistry at an early phase of drug manufacturing development and beyond. The selection of the appropriate flow pattern (PFR, CSTR or impinging jet) will be discussed based on mechanistic and kinetic understanding of the reaction. The results highlight key benefits of implementing flow chemistry to overcome safety issues, control undesired reaction pathways and improve overall reaction purity profiles.
