In second semester chemistry for science majors at Misericordia University, students work in small groups to create a visual document (e.g. a poster, book, or video) and give an oral presentation on a topic of their choosing that relates to everyday life or the students’ career plans. Each group must connect their topic to the chemistry course material and explain how it supports or comes into conflict with the university charisms (mercy, service, justice, and hospitality) or the critical concerns of the Sisters of Mercy (racism, women, earth, nonviolence, and immigration). Completed projects are shared in the class and at a university-wide symposium. Project details and implementation will be discussed.
