We developed efficient Catalytic Arene-Norbornene AnnuLation (CANAL) polymerization to synthesize rigid ladder polymers with norbornyl benzocyclobutene backbones and different substituents from readily accessible norbornadienes and aryl bromides. The resulting ladder polymers exhibit high surface areas, high microporosity, and high thermal stability without detectable T<sub>g</sub> below decomposition temperatures. Various high MW CANAL ladder or ladder-containing polymers have been investigated as membrane materials for gas separation.
