Much insight can be obtained from the use of small molecule complexes as models for enzyme active sites. For example, early work on molybdenum-containing enzymes identified the molybdenum coordination environment and the general molybdopterin ligand structure prior to the first published crystal structure. Such models often employ a symmetric dithiolene structure or bare placeholder ligands to prevent dimerization. While models with elaborate molybdopterin ligands are known, little work has been done to show the effect of the spectator ligands. Herein, we describe the synthesis of a molybdenum complex bearing a selenium-donating scorpionate ligand for the study of sulfite oxidase.
