While Supporting Information (SI) for American Chemical Society (ACS) journals is typically required and is freely available, there is no standardized review process, and errors frequently persist despite peer review. To address this problem, a data analyst at the ACS journal Organic Letters, reviews the SI for all manuscripts to ensure compliance with author guidelines and correction of missing data and/or data inconsistencies prior to publication. While rare, issues of data manipulation, including digitally altered spectra, and plagiarism have been identified. For authors and readers, this review ensures the SI is complete, improves reproducibility, maintains a consistent presentation of data, and minimizes the likelihood of incorrect and/or manipulated data. Organic Letters also works with authors to provide education and resources to improve manuscript and SI preparation. This presentation will describe our efforts toward creating best practices for reviewing the SI, issues encountered when requesting data from authors, and recommendations for authors when submitting data for a publication.
