Tris(2-pyridyl)phosphines can bind to a metal center via the central phosphorus donor or as a tripodal N,N,N chelate through the pyridyl nitrogen donors. Varying the position and type of pyridyl substituents on tris(2-pyridyl)phosphine can result in significant changes in structural and electronic properties the associated complexes. For example, tris(2-pyridyl)phosphine gold(I) halide complexes show substantial changes in fluorescence with varying pyridyl substituents. Tris(2-pyridyl)phosphine and tris[2-(6-bromopyridyl)]phosphine complexes were prepared from MII nitrates (M = NiII, CuII and ZnII) and MIII nitrates (M = CeIII, SmIII and YbIII) in one-pot syntheses to produce N,N,N coordinated ligand-metal complexes. Bimetallic complexes analogs were prepared from (tht)gold(I) halides, tris(2-pyridyl)phosphines, and an appropriate metal nitrate. Complexes were characterized by fluorescence, IR, UV-visible and 31P NMR spectroscopies. The tunability of these metal-ligand complexes has potential for molecular sensing applications.
