Hybrid materials containing organic polymers and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted attention for their potential to harness both diverse functionality and high processability, but their assembly is challenged by incompatibility of the parent components. Insolubility and aggregation of MOF crystals limits their dispersion throughout a polymer matrix, while polymer growth around MOFs often leads to pore-filling or -blocking effects which compromise performance. We report a new, versatile method of polymer-MOF hybridization which allows for improved integration through crystal surface interactions. Hybrid gels with MOF loadings of over 80% have been synthesized using a variety of polymer-MOF combinations. This method preserves the majority of the original porosity of the MOF, while demonstrating remarkable improvements in bulk strength and hydrolytic stability. The straightforward synthesis can be performed from a diverse set of cost-effective components, encouraging the design of new functional materials across a wide range of applications.
