Our lab has developed a modular synthesis of tris(2-aminoethyl)amine ligands utilizing inexpensive starting materials. The synthesis can be performed on large scales and does not require any complicated purification steps. Our methods allow for the production of tris(aryl)tren systems as well as bis(aryl)mono(alkyl)tren ligand sets. In studying the chemistry of these ligands, we discovered a templated synthesis of asymmetric tren ligands based upon an intramolecular C–N coupling reaction. The ligand synthesis will be discussed, as well as the general metalation of these ligands. The scope of the C–N coupling reaction will be explored, and its prospects toward catalysis will be discussed.
