Tris(6-amino-2-pyridylmethyl)amine (tapa) is known to bind metal ions in a tetradentate mode that encourages binding of exogenous anionic ligands in an open primary coordination site to form trigonal bipyramidal metal ion complexes. Upon binding, anionic ligands have the potential to form intramolecular H-bonds with the ligand amino functionalities in the secondary coordination sphere. We are exploring how this H-bonding pocket in the cobalt(II) ion complex of tapa influences the chemistry at the metal ion. Presented herein are results supporting the synthesis and characterization of a series of complexes of [Co(II)tapa]<sup>2+</sup> with anionic ligands including fluoride, chloride, bromide, azide and hydroxide ions. These reactions are shown to generally produce monomeric trigonal bipyramidal cobalt(II) complexes in the solid state including an uncommon mononuclear cobalt(II) fluoride species.
