The lecture will begin with the discussion of coordination-driven supramolecular self-assembly of metal-organic polyhedra (or metal-organic cages, MOCs) applied to polymer network synthesis. Specifically, MOCs serve as network junctions, whose assembly leads to gelation. The discussion will focus on the amplification of molecular-scale ligand bite-angle isomerism to macroscopic gel properties via MOC assembly and differences in the polymer architecture. Next, carbene-metal coordination as well as carbene insertion chemistry will be explored in the context of surface modification. Lastly, recent advances in coordination/insertion reactivity of metallocarbenes will be described, with a focus on polymer synthesis.
