Communicating chemistry to fellow scientists and to the world is a core function of the ACS. The quality and prestige of our publications, including more than 50 journals, are second to none. The effectiveness of our electronic research tools and databases and the services of the Chemical Abstracts Service establish the standard for all others. <br/> <br/>Communicating the values and role of the chemical sciences to non-specialists is another of our important responsibilities. To me, the goals of this communication are to inform, educate, engage, advocate, and persuade. We must reach out to the general public and show that the chemical sciences are a major part of the engine that drives our economy.<br/> <br/>For over three decades the ACS Northeastern Section has organized, sponsored, promoted, and succeeded in sharing the joy of chemistry with its own members and with the general community in New England. My talk is a tribute to the leadership of the NESACS members, and in particular the late Phyllis A. Brauner, for engaging the public in the beauty and importance of chemistry.
