Bisphenol A (BPA) is a man-made chemical used in industry and consumer products all over the world. BPA is used in plastic beverage bottles, compact disks, canned food linings and many other products. Human exposure to this chemical comes through leaching from these materials into food and liquids. Exposure to BPA is reported to cause major complications in the endocrine systems of many animal species and human populations. Previous studies using animal models have shown that low doses of bisphenol A and other persistent organic chemicals and some heavy metals etc., can make animals fat and gain weight. However, these chemicals cause similar harms to humans is still need to be elucidated. In this study, human exposure to BPA via drinking water, source water and indoor dust is explored. BPA concentrations were measured in several brands of bottled waters and in water samples from Bee Creek, Clarks River and Kentucky Lake. Indoor dust samples from homes, laboratories, offices were also analyzed for BPA levels. Standard analytical methods were followed to determine the concentrations of BPA in various matrices. Results revealed that detectable levels of BPA were found in almost all samples analyzed. BPA concentrations were relatively higher (520-10,200 ng/g) in indoor dust samples than water (74 ng/L – 280 ng/L) samples. The median values for BPA intake by way of the ingestion of dust by adults and toddlers were 0.35 and 5.63 ng/kg body weight per day.
