The role of Lewis acid in W(IV) or Mo(IV) oxo alkylidenes initiated ring-opening metathesis polymerization remain elusive. Till recently, our group have reported the synthesis of well-defined W(IV) and Mo(IV) oxo alkylidene complexes that are highly active in olefin metathesis. This work describes the synthesis of W(IV) and Mo(IV) oxo alkylidene complexes bearing a chiral C2-symmetric bidentate aryloxide ligand, as well as their application in initiating stereospecific ring-opening metathesis polymerization. In particular, B(C6F5)3 as the activator to the alkylidenes is investigated.
