Oceans are vast resources for different kinds of organic compounds. In the last few decades there has been a great upsurge in work on algae as a source of a wide range of valuable chemicals. Further interest in the microalgae has been generated in recent decades with the exploitation of green and blue-green algae, that are mainly used in the health food market.  In recent years the interest has been directed towards substituting chemically synthesized substances with naturally occurring ones. Especially in pharmaceutical applications because of the problems associated with the use of chemically synthesized drugs, which could lead to some unfavorable side effects in human bodies.  Our study showed that algae can serve as a good source for carotenoids and other antioxidants such as vitamin E and β-carotene. Antioxidants were extracted from different types of algae, and the extracts were examined using UV-visible spectroscopy and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Then, results were compared to each other.
