Our group has reported C2 + N1 catalytic aziridination with multiple macrocyclic NHC-supported catalysts ranging from chromium to iron. These catalysts have been successful with aryl or alkyl azides and aliphatic alkenes in intermolecular reactions. However, there are several challenges that must be addressed for these species to be effective in synthetic chemistry. First, they must be effective with a wide variety of functional groups on the alkene and azide. Second, the alkene to azide ratio must be reasonable. Third, the stereochemistry of the products must be predictable, and ideally, controlled. We are addressing all of these concerns with a variety of next-generation catalysts which improve the performance for each of these developmental areas. The advance of these catalysts is aided by in-depth mechanistic studies of the current generation of iron catalysts. Finally, we have developed a highly active iron catalyst for forming polycyclic aziridines which will be reported.
