Hybrid organic–inorganic MCM-41 (Mobil Composition of Matter No. 41) silicas functionalized with benzyl sulphonic acid were prepared and characterized by Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and N<sub>2</sub> adsorption analysis. The prepared catalyst (BSA-MCM-41) exhibited high catalytic activity in the nitration of TAIW (tetraacetylhexaazaisowurtzitane) aiming at synthesizing CL-20 (hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane), with the purity up to 98.6% and the yield up to 92.5%. The leaching problem was not observed after several runs, demonstrating that the catalyst could be recycled and reused without losing activity.
