The ionization constant (<i>K</i><sub>a</sub>) of an acid is traditionally measured by the titration of a known concentration of the acid with a standardized base, which leads to a considerable amount of waste. For the first time, the ionization constant is being determined at approximately 0 °C by microscale freezing point depression measurements using the van’t Hoff factor. The procedure involves several carboxylic acids (maleic, malonic, and oxalic) at multiple concentrations in pure water as well as mixed aqueous solvents (methyl, isopropyl, and t-butyl alcohols) The experiment is fast, uses extremely low concentrations of the solute and the results are easily reproducible leaving very little waste. The obtained results will be presented and comparison of data will be made.
