The diversity of materials manufactured by any chemical company calls for interesting analytical methodologies that include X-ray scattering techniques (WAXS, SAXS, USAXS). From characterizing polymers in various shapes, evaluating orientation, measuring particle size, analyzing thin films to quantifying inorganic additives, several different analytical approaches and supporting technology are needed to address those questions. Modern X-ray powder diffractometers can be configured in various ways to perform widely different measurements, including some that are typically more conducted on larger instruments (2D WAXS, 2D SAXS). Instrument attachments and configurations can in some instances be advantageously combined to further increase throughput. Through a few case studies we illustrate the types of questions that X-ray scattering tools can help address in everyday operations of a chemical company.
