Cyanide ion (CN-) from wastewater and agriculture products is dangerous for environment and human life. Monitoring of cyanide concentrations is, therefore, a field of prime importance. Herein, new visible and near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent sensors were designed and prepared based on fluorescein and aza-BODIPY dyes for selective cyanide ion sensing. The sensors provided sensitive fluorescence and chromogenic changes upon binding of cyanide ion, which could serve as a “visual-eye” indicator in the aqueous solutions. The sensors offered high selectivity for CN- in the presence of various competitive anion ions, such as I-, ClO3-, CO32-, SO42-, HSO4-, HPO4-, CH3COO-, NO3-, F- and Cl-. The potential of the sensors for cyanide detection in living cells was also demonstrated.
