New rhenium(I) complexes were prepared from reactions of Re2(CO)10 with either 1,10-phenanthroline or 2,2' bipyridine in a high-boiling alcohol used as both solvent and reactant. The reaction was carried out under an atmosphere of carbon dioxide and the isolated product included one equivalent of carbon dioxide in the form of an alkyl carbonate ligand. The products of the reaction have the general formula Re[OC(O)OR](CO)3(α-diimine) where R corresponds to the alkyl group on the alcohol reactant. The products were characterized by IR and NMR spectroscopies and by cyclic voltammetry. The substitution chemistry of the alkyl carbonate ligands was explored with several reactants including a variety of carboxylic acids. The products of the carboxylic acid reactions, which have the general formula Re[OC(O)R'](CO)3(α-diimine) (where R' arises from the carboxylic acid reactant) were also characterized by IR and NMR spectroscopies and cyclic voltammetry.
