Groundwater contaminants such as nitrate (NO3-) and perchlorate (ClO4-) causes health and environmental issues. Biological systems use molybdenum oxotransferases that facilitate the reduction of these species by oxygen atom transfer (OAT). The Mo-containing active site can accommodate the 2 e- redox process switching between MoIV(O) and MoVI(O)2. Many biomimetic analogues of oxotransferase active sites have been reported to show similar OAT activity. Recent studies have shown that addition of Sc3+ resulted in the clean conversion of nitrate to nitrite by MoIV(O)(SN)2, (SN =bis(4-tert -butylphenyl)-2-pyridylmethanethiolate). In this poster, we present the capability of two Mo-containing systems that are able to carry out nitrate and perchlorate reduction by addition of a lewis-acid.
