Smart materials that undergo a color change and/or a change in luminescence properties upon exposure to certain analytes continue to draw attention because of their potential practical utility in chemical sensing applications.  Examples include so-called vapochromic materials that exhibit a pronounced colorimetric response to certain volatile organic compounds.  In the case of Eisenberg-inspired smart molecular materials composed of platinum(II) complexes, changes in non-covalent metal-metal distances strongly influence the energies of low-lying charge-transfer states and are significant factors in the observed spectroscopic changes accompanying analyte uptake and release.  In this presentation, we will describe an expansion in the versatility of these systems and new methods of evaluating their remarkable properties.  The results reveal surprising structure, thermodynamics, kinetics and morphology relationships, as well as new mechanisms of response.
