Sequence controlled polymers have found use as advanced functional materials in multiple chemistry fields for the past half century. The ability to ensure precise placement of functional groups along the polymer backbone are key aspects for molecular recognition and self-assembly. An efficient precision macromolecule synthetic pathway based on AROMP (Alternating Ring Opening Metathesis Polymerization) was developed with amide derivatives of bicyclo [4,2,0] oct-7-ene-7-carboxylates and third generation Grubbs catalyst resulting in very long strictly alternating copolymers. We seek to expand on this alternating approach to obtain sequence controlled polymers. We are undertaking use of a solid support to anchor the polymer chain and to allow step-wise metathesis reactions. Resins and linkers were chosen in accordance with the durability of the copolymers and to ensure compatibility with the AROMP conditions. The properties of AROMP polymers created with solid phase organic synthesis methods will be compared to polymers prepared through solution-phase methods chemically to assess if there are any key difference in the material properties that result.
