Double perovskites, AA’BB’O6, are an essential set of compounds in both fundamental and technological research. These compounds can adopt a number of crystal structures and can be either ordered or disordered on the B site depending on the relative size of the B and B’ cations. A general rule of thumb is that the larger differences in ionic radii are correlated to higher degrees of cation ordering. The crystal structures can be either cubic (Fm-3m), tetragonal (I4/m), or monoclinic (P21/n) for cation ordered structures. For cation disordered structures they can be either cubic (Pm-3m) or orthorhombic (Pmna). This type of ordering or disordering of the B and B’ cations play a key role in the chemical and physical properties of these materials. Recently, we have synthesized five double perovskite compounds, which three of these are new, with the formula SrLaBB’O6 (B = Mg, Mn, and Zn; B’ = Ru and Os). Synchrotron x-ray diffraction indicates that all compounds crystallize in the P21/n type structure, consisting of alternating corner-shared BO6 and B’O6 octahedra. Their magnetic properties were evaluated using magnetometry, heat capacity, and neutron diffraction measurements. The structure and magnetic properties of these ordered double perovskites SrLaBB’O6 will be presented.
