Phosphazenes, which contain P-N bonds, are usually preparerd from compounds that contain P-Cl bonds, such as PCl3 and PCl5. Nature creates P-N bonds from phosphate reagents. As a way to develop a greener synthesis of phosphazenes, we are examining replacement of the P-Cl reagents with otho or meta phosphoric acid and phosphates. In this work, we describe attempts to convert ring and polymeric phophosphates to trimetaphosphimic acid and related compounds that have alternating P and N atoms. Methods of analysis will include 1H and 31P NMR and X-ray crystallography.
