This research explored the use of electroanalytical chemistry in an instructional laboratory to determine the active ingredient concentration in common topical analgesics. Students determined analyte concentrations using commercially available, inexpensive, disposable, carbon screen-printed electrodes in conjunction with cyclic voltammetry. Anodic and cathodic peak currents of aqueous benzocaine solutions were determined. Standardized aqueous benzocaine solutions were prepared with a variety of buffers at different pH values and concentrations. Students then used the anodic or cathodic peak height data to create calibration curves of peak current versus benzocaine concentration. The validity of the process was then tested using blind samples prepared by the instructor and provided to the students.<br/>
