We examine the size dependent photoluminescence (PL) and quantum yield (QY) exhibited by colloidal nanocrystals synthesized from both silicon and lead-halide perovskite (LHP). In particular, we focus on the impact of interfacial processes on the kinetics of radiative recombination and PL efficiency, such as the choice of surface passivation chemistry. Using computation and theory as a guide, we leverage our experimental findings to try to gain valuable insight into the underlying interfacial phenomena that enable efficient visible PL from both of these nanomaterials. In this regard, we also examine the impact that the nanocrystal environment can have on the PL stability and QY of both silicon nanocrystals (SiNCs) and LHP nanocrystals, including inter-particle interactions and nanocrystal self-assembly.
