Cannabis has been a companion species to humans for thousands of years. Humans have used cannabis to serve a number of useful purposes including medicine and enjoyment. In the early 1900s cannabis prohibition left cannabis science largely on the sidelines. Since California passed legislation allwoing for medical use of cannabis many states have followed suit with many opting for adult usage legislation as well. This change in paradigm has resulted in greater expectations from consumers including both efficacy and safety. Independant laboratories are filling this need. With cannabis still federally prohibited the landscape of regulatory requirements is fragmented by state boundaries. Cannabis is a natural product with diverse forms and applications. Ensuring the safety, efficacy, and quality of cannabis requires close collaboration with the local regulatory oversight bodies as well as the cannabis community at large. The analysis of cannabis calls upon pharmaceutical sciences, environmental sciences, as well as food safety sciences. All of these factors make cannabis science and exciting and dynamic area of focus with a great need for talented scientists to direct the future of cannabis science to its highest potential in ensuring a safe and beneficial relationship between humans and cannabis.
