To improve the bio-oil produced from pyrolysis of biomass, catalytic co-pyrolysis of biomass and plastic is one effective method. However, the reaction mechanism, especially the synergism between biomass and plastic is scarce. In this study, co-pyrolysis of polypropylene and glucose over mesoporous catalyst MCM-41 and Al-MCM-41 was studied using TGA and Py-GC-MS. The deuterated glucose dextrose was used to track how the hydrogen transfers from plastic to biomass. The results show significant synergism for the catalytic co-pyrolysis. The yield of hydrocarbon produced from co-pyrolysis with MCM-41 and Al-MCM-41 are 43.44% and 36.09% more than the calculated value, respectively. Olefins and aromatic hydrocarbon are the main synergetic products. What’s more, all the products of co-pyrolysis of deuterated glucose and PP have n+1 or n+2 mass number in the presence of catalyst MCM-41 or Al-MCM-41, respectively. It suggests the co-pyrolysis products contains both the hydrogen from the PP and the deuterium from glucose. The result is consistent with the “hydrocarbon pool” mechanism, which supposes the hydrogen is shareable. Furthermore, the results of this study show the hydrogen is used in specific rule rather than simply random.
