Recently, Mg metal has been tested as a reductant of environmental contaminants for potential applications in the remediation processes. Utilization of zero-valent Mg (ZVMg) for the treatment of contaminatns would have several advantages. For instance, (1) ZVMg (E0SHE = -2.37 V) has the highest reducing power among zero-valent metals employed in the contaminant reduction processes; (2) the nuisance effect of surface passivation is not significant because of substantially high solubility of its corrosion products; and (3) the effect of oxygen is generally negligible on the reactivity of ZVMg. Currently, we are examining the reactivity of ZVMg in aqueous solutions as a strong and effficient reducing agent of various contaminants and trying to elucidate the corresponding reaction pathways and mechanisms of the contaminant removal processes. In this presentation are presented our recent results of ZVMg utilization for the removal of redox-sensitive contaminants such as Cr(VI) and U(VI). In addition, discussed is the potentiality of practical application of ZVMg wasted from industrial manufacturing processes using metallic Mg and Mg alloy.
