Inflammation in the respiratory system can be non-invasively monitored by measuring biomarkers in exhaled breath condensate. Among the many molecules detected in exhaled breath condensate (EBC), nitrite and nitrate, are the stable end products of metabolism of nitric oxide. Increasing amounts of these have been found to be related to the level of inflammation in the respiratory systems. We present an electrochemical system for monitoring nitrite content in exhaled breath condensate. We utilized the unique properties of reduced graphene oxide (rGO); specifically, the material is resilient to corrosion while exhibiting rapid electron transfer with electrolytes, thus allowing for highly sensitive electrochemical detection with minimal fouling. Our rGO sensor was housed in an electrochemical cell fabricated from polydimethyl siloxane (PDMS), which was necessary to analyze small EBC sample volumes. We will discuss results of using our sensors on clinical EBC samples.
