The molecular mechanisms of etiology and pathophysiology of neurodegenerative diseases (NGD’s) including Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and Parkinson’s disease (PD) have not been elucidated. In addition to genetic and environmental factors, emerging evidence suggests that neuro-inflammation associated with dysregulated stress response may accelerate progressive proteotoxic deterioration of neuronal function in AD and PD. Lack of pharmaceutical drugs, has continued search for therapeutic interventions and novel drug targets for NGD’s especially AD and PD. In this regard, cannabinoids, a class of phenolicterpenes unique to the Cannabis spp. that modulate neuronal health and function through the endocannabinoid system and other signaling pathways, may be promising candidates for discovery of novel drugs for AD and PD. Here we discuss results from our on going studies on the evaluation of five different cannabis plant extracts and cannabinoids on abrogating experimentally induced neurodegeneration and neurotoxicity using invertebrate models (C. elegans and D. melanogaster) of AD and PD.
