The role of LGBTQ+ mentors and role models in the sciences is rapidly changing, alongside changes in public conversations around LGBTQ+ people, civil rights recognitions, and frames for addressing lack of diversity and implicit bias in the sciences. Invariably, those of us who are in a position to act in these roles generalize most easily from our own experiences—which become less relevant to the needs of our students with each passing year. The importance of recognizing our own privilege while directing our efforts to the intersectional challenges that many of our LGBTQ+ students face will be discussed. The importance of the role that we can play in using our own experiences of discrimination, inequity, and stereotype threat to address injustices for non-LGBTQ+ marginalized people will also be discussed in the context of a personal narrative.<br/>

Our students need different mentors today than we needed back then. How can we be those mentors?
