Many of the catalytic transformations involved in the conversion of chemicals and biomass-derived intermediates are carried out in solvents that can significantly influence the rates, selectivities and the mechanisms for different catalytic reactions. Solvents can act to stabilize or destabilize reaction intermediates and transition states and, in some cases, they are intimately involved in co-catalyzing reactions. In this talk, we examine the solvent structure and dynamics under reaction conditions and their influence on the free energy for catalytic transformations that occur in the solution phase for mixed solvent systems.  We discuss the role of solvent in homogeneous acid catalyzed reactions as well as well as heterogeneous acid catalyzed systems in nanoporous architectures. We extended the discussion of solvent effects to metal catalyzed hydrogenation and hydrogenolysis reactions and discuss the interesting similarities and differences with those from acid catalyzed systems.<br/>
