Medical device coating involves complex chemical reactions and difficult treating procedures. For the antimicrobial and disinfection purpose, there is no coating technology currently available that can prevent the notorious biofilm formation issue for a long term, which elicit enormous healthcare problems. Zwitterionic polymers emerged as new generation of materials with excellent non-fouling properties. We developed a novel coating technology based on zwitterionic materials that can be applied on many common substrates as easy as a double-sided tape. The novel coating shows high toughness and durability. More importantly, after one-month continuous contact with ultra-high concentration bacteria, the coating surface remains nearly “0” bacterial cell adhesion. Current antimicrobial coating technology develops biofilm (~100% bacteria coverage) in less than one week under similar testing condition. The new technology is simple to apply and can promisingly solve the biofilm threat, which deteriorates public health and impedes the function of most biomedical devices.
