Different from continuously bonded metal atoms (M-M-M-M) at metallic state on surface of metal nanoparticles and periodically packed M cation on surface of a metal oxide (M-O-M-O), a singly dispersed metal atom, M1 (A-O-A-O-M1-O-A-O) on surface of an oxide substrate is in a different coordination environment. This difference in geometric structure at atomic scale could induce distinct difference in local electronic states, which essentially results in obvious difference in catalytic performance between singly dispersed sites at cationic state and continuously distributed sites on surface of metal or metal oxide nanoparticles. For such a single site, both reactant A and B could coadsorb on it. If adsorption energy of one reactant is much higher than the other, a preferential adsorption of one reactant can definitely prevent the adsorption of another reactant and thus poison this reaction. In this case, to trigger this reaction a high catalysis temperature is necessary for activating or dissociating this strongly bound reactant. A catalyst with anchored two sets of single sites (and ) could minimize such a poisoning effect if each of them responds the activation of one reactant. Here I will present reforming CH4 with CO2 on the catalyst of CeO2 with anchored and . This catalyst exhibits activity in dry reforming of methane and selectivity for production of H2 higher than /CeO2 and /CeO2 which only have single site cation and single site or cations, respectively. The synergic effect of dual single sites suggests a method of designing a catalyst through anchoring two sets of single sites which respond the activation of reactants A and B, respectively.
