The ability to assemble nanoparticles into periodic structures and their catalytic properties are significantly influenced by the surface ligands. In turn, the ability to modify nanoparticles with certain types of organic molecules depends on the composition of inorganic core. We will discuss the effect of surface modification on the catalytic properties of metal and metal alloy nanoparticles. We will show that surface modification with organic or inorganic molecules can induce the electronica effects in nanoparticles, that in turn, affects the self-assembly and catalytic properties. We will present different strategies toward improved selectivity of nanocatalysts in catalytic alkyne and citral hydrogentation reactions.
