The purpose of this research was to develop a resistor-capacitor (RC) circuit model for predicting desalination performance of membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI) systems for desalination of synthetic and real brackish water. The electrical current response for the multicell MCDI devices was modelled as a function of the solution resistances, and the resistance and capacitance of the MCDI device. The RC circuit model is coupled with a model of current utilization as a function of different electrode types and operation parameters. This is in turn used for prediction of desalination performance over a range of operation parameters, desired water quality and hydraulic recovery. The specific energy consumption (SEC) from these experiments were also evaluated for comparison and to show the effect of water quality goals and hydraulic recovery on SEC. All experimental results and calculations used in the understanding of system performance were normalized to ensure scale up and applicability by other researchers. The findings of this research will help researchers and utilities understand the tradeoffs encountered in the use of different electrode types in MCDI applications.<br/>
