The large family of ternary RT2X (R = rare earth, T = transition metal, X = Al, Ga, Si, Ge, Sn) compounds has been the subject of intense research during recent decades. These materials exhibit a variety of unique magnetic properties including heavy fermions with magnetic or superconducting ground states. Among the rare earth-transition metal RT2X compounds, the physical and electronic properties of the germanide and silicide compounds are the most thoroughly studied. Unlike the silicides and germanides, only four series of aluminides have been investigated (T = Fe, Ni, Pd, and Pt). These systems also have fascinating magnetic behavior. For instance, the gadolinium transition metal aluminides (GdT2Al) exhibit ferromagnetic transition temperatures at 250 K, 48 K, and 39 K, for Fe, Pd, and Ni, respectively. An additional transition temperature is observed ca. 20 K due to a spin reorientation process. We have also shown interest in this GdT2Al system, and have synthesized several new compounds (T = Sc, Cr, Co), with ferromagnetic transitions greater than the Fe-analog. In this talk, we will present on their structural and physical properties.
