Nitrogen-nitrogen bonded molecules occur in nature but are extremely uncommon. Several of these molecules have demonstrated promising biological activity. The most common method of synthesizing molecules containing nitrogen-nitrogen bonds is to use a hydrazine derivative, containing a nitrogen protecting group, as the starting material and derivatizing the molecule by adding functional groups. This approach can result in low overall yields due to the linear nature of the synthesis and involves starting materials that can be unsuitable for undergraduate research students. Development of a new method of synthesizing nitrogen-nitrogen bonds using a nucleophilic nitrogen and an electrophilic nitrogen with an attached leaving group is being tested, utilizing a bimolecular substitution (S<sub>N</sub>2) reaction. Once developed, this reaction could be used to carry out the synthesis of nitrogen-nitrogen containing molecules with a higher overall yield due to the convergent nature of the synthesis. This method could also be used to synthesize and test the biological activity of known compounds and unnatural derivatives in a much safer and more practical way.<br/>
