The surface structural characteristics of catalytic materials respond to the instantaneous reaction conditions. Not only does the steady state inventory of adsorbed species and reaction intermediates change with conditions, but the characteristics of the surface region of the catalyst can also change. A particular example of the latter are changes in surface distribution of the components of mixed metal alloy catalysts. We report on the use of LEIS to interrogate the top layer of Pt-based metal alloy catalysts to reveal changes in the top atomic layer of metal which result from changes in the adsorbed layer (CO, H, etc.). These findings are related to changes in site activity of alloys measured by isotope transient techniques.
