Sulfadiazine (SFZ) was frequently found in various waters, suggesting conventional wastewater treatment methods ineffective in its removal. In this study, Cu-doped LaFeO3 (LaFe1-xCuxO3) was synthesized using a sol-gel method. The characterization of as-synthesized catalysts by XRD, XPS, EDX, ESR and FTIR confirmed Cu was successfully incorporated into the structure of LaFeO3. Compared to LaFeO3, the catalytic activity of LaFe1-xCuxO3 towards peroxymonosulfate (PMS) was significantly increased in term of SFZ degradation. With the enhancement of Cu doping amount, the catalytic activity increase of LaFe1-xCuxO3 was observed when Cu doping amount ranged from 0 to 7.5% (molar ratio). SFZ degradation reaction rate constant in LaFe0.925Cu0.075O3/PMS system is 5 times larger than that in LaFeO3/PMS system. When 10% Cu was doped, the further increase of the catalytic activity of LaFe1-xCuxO3 was not observed. The underlying mechanisms regarding the promoting effect of Cu doping on the catalytic activity of LaFeO3 were illuminated through O2-TPD, H2-TPR, XPS and 57Fe MÖssbauer spectra analysis. The intermediates were identified during SFZ degradation and possible decay pathways were proposed.
