Among various hydrogen storage compounds, boron-based compounds have attracted much attention. For example, the hydrolytic dehydrogenation of NH<sub>3</sub>BH<sub>3</sub> has been studied as an efficient means of hydrogen production with high hydrogen selectivity for practical applications. Various metal particles have been thus suggested as catalysts for the efficient hydrolytic dehydrogenation of ammonia borane. Down-sizing metal particles to nanoscale often boosts their catalytic activities and thus achieves the high utilization of the metal particle catalysts, which is of significance especially for precious noble metals like Pt. In the current presentation, we will discuss the synthesis of ultra-small Pt nanoparticles having different but uniform sizes as efficient dehydrogenation catalysts. Recently, we reported the controlled synthesis of Pt dendrimer-encapsulated nanoparticles (Pt DENs) via repetitively coupled chemical reduction and galvanic reactions [Langmuir, 2018, 34, pp7436-7444]. The synthesis strategy allowed the expansion of the applicable number of Pt atoms encapsulated inside dendrimers to more than 1000, which has been challenging in the conventional synthesis of Pt DENs. We found that the synthesized Pt nanocatalysts (i.e., Pt DENs) showed significant catalytic activities for dehydrogenation of hydrogen storage compounds, which was found to be quite sensitive to the sizes of Pt DENs.
