The rapid spread of polymyxin E (colistin) resistance among bacterial strains through the horizontally transmissible <i>mcr-carrying</i> plasmids has become a serious concern.  The emergence of these genes in carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae that are resistant to the carbapenem class of antibiotics, considered the drugs of last resort for infections was even more worrisome.  To prevent further spread of mobile colistin resistance to hospitals and other healthcare settings, which has already been observed, human responses are needed.   In this presentation, we will provide an overview of the global occurrence of mobile colistin-resistance, potential dissemination of <i>mcr </i>genes and detection methods used to monitor the prevalence of colistin-resistant bacteria in food-producing animals with emphasis on work performed at the USDA, ARS, Western Regional Research Center.
